Investigations were done after one week and the new week was for the court proceedings to begin. I woke up very early on Wednesday morning meant for the court case. I searched through Leonard’s wardrobe and found one of the shirts he bought for me. I ironed a blue shirt and a pair of black jeans. I went to wash down. I was not too confident even though I knew I was innocent. In the bedroom I was nervous. This was my first time going to a courtroom. Moreover, I wasn’t just going there as a mere person, I was going there because I was the centre of this case. Even telling one policewoman that I was having sex with Leonard and he passed out was a problem and now here I was going to stand in front of a judge, his officials, and a large crowd who would all be seated to witness the case.
After washing down, I got to the room and started dressing up. I nearly forgot to even wear a panty. Was it my fault? As young as I was to be charged with a case of having a hand in the death of a young guy who had a choked breath, knowing of my innocence as we were just having fun, the court, the police, and the health practitioners stood by the point that, it could be murder. I got my panty on, then my vest, my jeans trousers, and my shirt. I buttoned the shirt and tucked it inside the trousers. I fixed a belt and got black sandals on. I went into the wardrobe, grabbed my glasses, and wore it. My long braids were still new. I rolled it into a different style which made me looked many officials.
I took my Catholic 📿 and recited it and prayed.”Leonard, whatever happens, today, just know I did all my best for you” I said to myself. I took my phone and called the nurse that I was done. She had already checked earlier to know she was off day so she was going with me and the taxi driver to the court. Miss Cynthia came with the Taxi driver. I went out to meet them. She hugged me and whispered into my ears, “just do as I told you”.”Certainly I will”I replied. In less than 5mins after Miss Cynthia and the Taxi driver had arrived, a black jeep also pulled over and packed behind the taxi. Two men came out all dressed in uniforms as lawyers. One of them I had already met earlier last week. He was Mr. Daniels, a cousin to Miss Cynthia. He was standing in for me as my lawyer.
They all got closer to us.Mr. Daniels introduced the other lawyer with him to us. Meet Mr.Boakye Agyapong, he is a colleague lawyer who has helped me with information and proofs on how to win this case .”Daniels, you have to take the lead with the girl to the court, I will join you there with the driver, we need to finish up a task” Miss Cynthia said.”Yes, sure Cynthia but get back on time” Mr. Daniels replied.
At this point, I had realized something was happening behind the scene which I didn’t know off.Mr. Daniels asked me to join in their jeep. I was scared.”What if these people had a different intention which was bad for me”?I asked myself.”Anyways, whatever be the case, I knew God was with me and the spirit of Leo was with me as well” I thought to myself. I got into the jeep and we moved.
In less than 30mins, we were at the court premises. We got off the jeep and walked towards the courtroom. The courtroom was packed. News had traveled far. My lawyer earlier told me the news had even been published in one of the national graphics claiming a young girl who murdered a young guy but had been denying and relating the act to stress from sex. The room I guess was packed because everyone wanted to listen to the real truth of this issue.
We went straight to the front seat and sat down. The courtroom got a bit noisy when we entered and walked through to take our seat in front.
After some time, the judge held her gavel and hit it three times on her bench to ensure law and order. The room became quiet. There was total silence as if the room had been turned into a cemetery.
The Judge made the first proclamation and her judicial assistant took over. The doctor and his team who were on duty on that very faithful day were invited to present the case and tell the court what happened. As the doctor entered the Jury box, he was asked about his religious background and he said he was a Christian. He was given a Holy Bible to swear an oath of telling the court and the whole room nothing but the truth. As he stood and presented the case, he said, “on the very faithful day, 20th November 2018, I was reading through some patients’ files on my table when some nurses on duty rushed into my office to tell me there was an emergency. I rushed out of my office without even locking it up to attend to the patient. When I got to the patient, I felt his heartbeat to verify if it was still active. The heart wasn’t beating. I conducted other checks on the visible veins on his hands and felt the blood flowing through his veins had paused. I ordered my nurses to quickly prepare a theatre room so we could move him there and start working on him.
We had drips fused on him as the nurses were preparing the room but before the nurses would return, I had had so many other check-ups on him and already confirmed we had lost the patient even before he was brought to the hospital. The nurses came back to tell me the theatre room was ready but I said to them that we already lost the patient. I had my nurses out and conducted a few checks on the patient to find out what actually went wrong. I realized he had a swollen heart indicating he was choked of breath and died because he had difficulty breathing before he died. I went ahead to question the lady who brought the patient and she claimed the patient passed out when she was having sex with him”.
My lawyer was already on his feet close to the Jury box and shouted, “Objection my Lord, this is a courtroom and all forms of profane languages should be prohibited”.”No my Lord, sex is the best word the doctor should be allowed to use to get us to clarify what actually went on. If he should say they were in bed, being in bed could be just beside each other in bed and chatting”the lawyer from the opposing countered my lawyer.” Objection overruled, you may continue”the judge shouted. The doctor went on”per my knowledge and a practicing doctor, I can boldly stand for the fact that if it was just because of sex as the lady said, perhaps, the deceased would have gotten to know he was running out of breath and had stopped the act”.”Objection my Lord, how can this doctor already be calling my client a murderer? the deceased was enjoying and was lost in passion and that’s why he couldn’t realize he was losing breathe” my lawyer shouted again.” Objection over-ruled, he is the medical person and when it comes to issues of such nature, he had conducted his check-ups so let’s leave him to finish, you may continue”the judge said.
At this time I was already feeling the heat. My butts were hot already. I felt like peeing on myself. I knew this case was never going to be easy. I looked around and into the crowd if I could see Miss Cynthia and the Taxi driver. The taxi driver was also a witness on my behalf. I was scared when I realized I couldn’t see them around. I was sitting but inside of me, I was going insane. They told us they would join us here but if at this time they are still not here then it meant they may be up to something really complicated behind the scene.” In view of my check-ups, I stand by the fact that the deceased was murdered and not just pass out because he lost breath through sex”.”You may now take your seat” the Judicial Secretary said to the doctor. Now the case had been made, I knew all the charges were against me. Leonard was not alive to speak the truth on my behalf so I had to defend myself with the truth I knew. I was waiting to be called and questioned. The judge made a proclamation again that the remains of the deceased should be brought as proof to the case before I would be called to answer questions and also defend myself with my lawyer.
An ambulance was parked in front of the courtroom when we arrived earlier. I didn’t know it was carrying the corpse of Leonard. The doctor rushed to the ambulance with his medical team to bring the corpse. In less than a minute, the body was brought in. The judge asked them to have it opened. They uncovered the corpse and certainly with no doubts it was the remains of Leonard. All hope was lost. Leonard was indeed dead. All the confidence I had in Miss Cynthia, her words, and the lawyer had vanished. I was all in tears now. The judge called my name to get into the Jury box for questioning. I walked into the box still crying. I tried to wipe the tears and control myself but it was getting worse. That was the first time I was seeing Leonard’s body after the incident when we rushed him to the hospital. After some minutes, my lawyer came close to me and whispered to me that I should stop crying and attend the court else their plan will fail. I stopped crying but I said in my head”what plan again do they have? the person is dead while you and your cousin claimed he was still alive so what plan again do you have”?I asked in my head.
I was also given a Bible to swear an oath to tell nothing but the truth to the court. I did as I was told. The opponent lawyer came and began the questioning “Miss Rachael, I’m very sure this corpse is the remains of the guy you rushed to the hospital”?he asked. I felt nervous but I spoke, “Yes that’s Leonard”.
As soon as I replied, a voice shouted after me “No that’s not Leonard, I’m Leonard and I was the one she rushed to the hospital”.Everywhere was silent. All attention and eyes were driven to the back of the courtroom where the shout came from.
I also raised my head and I couldn’t believe my eyes of what I was seeing. Miss Cynthia, the taxi driver, and another Leonard. He looked no different from the Leonard who laid dead in front of us. I nearly collapsed. I was so confused. I never knew humans could resemble this because I never knew Leonard as a twin. Everything about this new guy was just like the one who laid dead. I was confused myself trying to know which of them I actually had sex with and later rushed to the hospital. Every soul in the courtroom had melted as Miss Cynthia, the taxi driver and the new Leonard walked through the crowd towards my direction
